Learn about the Communication Compass and how it can help connect with others!
Just the Facts…
- Facts are facts. These are the things you experience with your senses – what you can see, hear, touch, taste or smell.
- Facts are inarguable. There is no debate.
- BUT…most of us hold onto things as facts or “the truth” which are not facts, which is usually the beginning of emotional upset.
Moving on to Desires
- Desires are what you want.
- Most people get hung up on what they don’t want, not what they do want!
- What do you want to experience? Define what you want as clearly as possible instead of focusing on what you want to avoid.
Judgments, Thoughts & Opinions
- Most of us judge things & hold them as facts. When we do, we get emotionally attached to them, create expectations, and then usually create negative feelings, too.
- Opinions are 100% debatable! Someone else might have the opposite opinion, and who is “right” can be argued…to no end!
- Nearly everything we say is our own judgment, thought or opinion because it’s all we have access to! We observe facts and create judgments about them – it’s the way our brain works naturally.
Feelings & Emotions
- There are 4 basic emotions – happy, sad, angry & scared. All other emotions are some combination or form of these at different levels of intensity.
- Pay attention to what you say you “feel”, and how other people use the word feel. A lot of the time, people use that word when discussing their thoughts. For example, “I feel like you just don’t understand me”.
- It’s an important distinction because we are more inherently attached to our feelings than our thoughts. (This is HUGE!)
- People naturally believe they can change their thoughts, but not necessarily their emotions.
- Most of us also identify with our emotions through language. For example, we say “I am angry” which equates to I = angry. Identifying with the feeling makes it much harder to change.
- When you say you feel frustrated, for example, there’s no solution in that. You can easily fix it by saying “I am frustrating myself by…” This statement allows you to change how you’re feeling by changing what you’re doing or thinking to create the feeling. There’s an inherent solution and action to change it.
Communication Compass
The power in the Communication Compass is in the application of it. Facts come first, closely followed by judgments and then the emotions are triggered. By picking apart situations, you can help yourself choose better emotions and achieve your desires! ~ SS
