Language has a profound affect on your life – the way you say things can either empower or disempower. Find out how to stay empowered!
How Language Affects You Internally
- What you say to yourself is more important than what others say about you. Understand that no one can make you feel anything – all of our emotions are created internally with that self-talking inner critic.
- The language we use is often filled with expectations – and what frequently comes with expectations is disappointment. Be careful not to own your past or future by using present tense words.
- Labels. Many of us have unconscious labels we’ve accepted in life, and they have huge emotional triggers attached to them. Be careful with any labels – even good, bad, or right and wrong.
- The unconscious mind is magnetically drawn to clarity & will always fight to achieve control in any situation. (In other words, we are all control freaks!) The problem here is most of us are not clear on what we want – but very clear on what we don’t want – so that’s what we attract.
5 Ways We Disempower Ourselves
1. Resistance triggers – words like should, need, and have to can create immediate resistance. Replace them with WANT TO.
2. Hidden messages & disempowered assumptions – such as “I can’t wait to start experiencing results” which assumes you’re not getting results and attracts that as well.
3.
Negative affirmations – such as “I’m always late” will keep you stuck in that realm. Affirm the opposite – the positive and that which you want to experience.
Negative affirmations – such as “I’m always late” will keep you stuck in that realm. Affirm the opposite – the positive and that which you want to experience.4. Universals – like all, everyone, nobody, never, always. When you use these words, you’re a victim of your circumstances and you have no CHOICE to respond. For example, if nobody has money, your business has no chance to succeed.
5. Owning past habits – such as “All my relationships end in disaster”…which is true, until they don’t. Using present and future tense language to own the past will continue it in the present. Simply add the phrase “In the past” or “Up until now” to keep the potential for change.
How Can You Live Empowered?
Here are some tips to empower your language:
1. Challenge your own thoughts. Bring your language into your consciousness. Be aware & in control of what comes out of your mouth.
2. Answer the questions you’re asking (and ask better questions). When you ask yourself why something negative is happening, your mind will answer it – often in a disempowering way. Instead, ask how, and let your mind come up with action-based solutions instead!
3. Accountability partner. Get help to bring the words you use into your awareness.
4. Journal your thoughts. Capture and read what you say – internally and externally. Writing can help you find solutions.
5. Own your experiences to avoid conflicts. Again, no one can make you feel anything, so own the feeling and use phrases like “I get upset when…”
6. Choose your words carefully. Replace “but” with “and”, “can’t” with “choose not to”, etc. When you say you can’t, you’re taking your choice away. Take it back and express your choice instead! ~ SS
