I hosted an Expert Interview was with my friend, fellow coach, and one of my first coaching clients, Debbie Poloka.
It was a great call highlighting what coaching is, what it’s not, and how it could help you.
What is Coaching? What is it Not?
Coaching is:
- Accountability
- Problem solving
- Customized for you
- Listening & sharing
- Help to find the answers & motivation
- Clearing out what’s in the way
Coaching is NOT:
- Therapy
- Friendship
- One size fits all
- Rehashing the past
- Creating labels
- Coping
There’s a distinct difference between coping with your current circumstances and clearing them. Most of us know how to cope, but that’s only going to keep us where we are.
In order to move forward, you’ve got to clear out what’s in the way. Usually what’s in the way is in your blind spot. Coaches are great at helping you see what’s in your blind spot, and working with you to clear it away.
What Makes Coaching Effective?
Coaching is effective when the relationship is built on trust and there is great rapport. These factors make it easy for someone to open up and share what needs to be shared in order to clear out the obstacles.
Debbie shared her story of why coaching was effective in moving her from the depths of despair and suicidal thoughts to actually liking herself – when therapy didn’t work at all.
For her, therapy was all about rehashing the past and looking at who she used to be and trying to use that information to explain who she had become.
In contrast, coaching was looking at who she was right then and who she wanted to be, and looking at the past to clear out blocks and boundaries she had created to keep her stuck. There was much more forward motion, as compared to past exploration.
Why Are Coaches Important?
In a nutshell, coaches are important because we cannot “fix” ourselves. While we have all the answers, often we are too close to our own situations to see the answers, much less ask ourselves the right questions to get in motion.
Here are some coaching options we offer:
- Consultations. We offer one consultation per client to see if coaching would be a good fit for you. Because a coaching relationship must be built on trust & understanding, our coaching may not be right for everyone. Consultations are free.
- Private Coaching. We have a variety of coaching programs, ranging from $97 per month to $3,000 for Whatever It Takes. The consultation can help identify what program would be best for you.
- Group Coaching. That’s exactly what the Eagles Club is designed to be – a group coaching program to keep you plugged in to a positive and empowering environment.
