It’s likely that you have been affected by cancer at some point in your life – either you personally, someone in your family, a close friend, or a distant relative. Cancer has become more and more common each year, and Dr. Susan Silberstein shared about an hour of her time to talk about how to combat cancer with your fork!
Dr. Silberstein is founder & executive director of Center for Advancement in Cancer Education. She is an advocate, speaker, and author of “Hungry for Health,” as well as creator of “Beat Cancer” series of tool kits. Here’s a sampling of what she had to say:
What is it doctors don’t tell us that can save our lives?
Food has a tremendous power to harm or heal. Proper nutrition can prevent cancer, along with numerous other diseases, as well as their recurrence. Through diet alone you can create an internal environment that is unfriendly to growth of cancer.
The reality is most cancer patients don’t die from their tumors. This happens only if cancer cells are suffocating a vital life organ such as the colon or lungs. Most cancer patients die of malnutrition, toxemia and/or infections. And proper nutrition can address all of these!
Describe proper nutrition. What are some harmful foods we should avoid and why?
- Sugar is cancer’s favorite food. Growth of cancer cells depends on the frequency and amount of sugar consumption. While sugar is harmful, artificial sweeteners are worse.
- Animal fat & protein – high amounts of these in your diet put you at greater risk of cancer. So be aware of types of fats you consume and opt for fewer animal fats.
- Milk – it’s been documented that countries with the highest milk consumption have the highest cancer rates. Try soy milk instead.
Are there other dangerous foods to avoid?
It’s more about what you want to include than what you have to give up, but it is important to point out that microwaved foods are dangerous. Research shows that microwaved foods have immunosuppressive & carcinogenic properties …it’s frightening!!
What are some foods you recommend to help prevent and/or reverse cancer?
- Fiber
- Carotenes – which give fruits & veggies their bright colors
- Flaxseeds – are high in fiber and high in omega-3 fatty acids that are healthy
- Organic berries – are rich in antioxidants
- Crucifers – such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage
Do you have any other suggestions you’d like to share?
Make gradual changes. It’s not complicated to eat healthy – it just takes a little planning.
